I had unpublished it, as a traditional publisher had taken it on and signed a contract, but the publishing house folded. So, after a two year hiatus, here it is again, this time in a second edition with some tightening of laces and expansion in minor characters. Here\u2019s a flavour about Laura\u2019s friend, Bo the Singapore barista, who worked with Laura in the Insomnia caf\u00e9:<\/p>\n
The following afternoon was overcast but dry when he picked her up at the Insomnia caf\u00e9. He was going to take her walking to the north side of the city to show her the prison where he taught.
\nThe caf\u00e9 was busy with students and bank or office workers on their breaks. Laura introduced Danny to a tall dark-haired girl in her late twenties with a pleasant smile who was serving behind the counter.
\n\u2018This is Bo.\u2019
\n\u2018Hi,\u2019 she said.
\n\u2018Pleased to meet you,\u2019 Danny said.
\n\u2018Would you like a coffee before you go?\u2019 Bo said.
\n\u2018Have we time?\u2019 Danny said to Laura.
\n\u2018Sure,\u2019 Laura said.
\n\u2018I heard you do a great cappuccino,\u2019 Danny said.
\nBo smiled. \u2018I\u2019ll bring them over to you.\u2019
\nLaura and Danny sat at a window seat looking out on the crowds passing by in Nassau Street.
\n\u2018Lunch break. Permanent lunch break,\u2019 Laura said referring to the crowds as Bo came with a tray of cappuccinos and two blueberry muffins.
\n\u2018You in Ireland long?\u2019 Danny said to Bo.
\n\u2018Two years.\u2019
\n\u2018Your English is very good.\u2019
\n\u2018Thank you.\u2019
\n\u2018Bo has an Irish boyfriend too,\u2019 Laura said.
\n\u2018I see.\u2019 Danny was chuffed at the word too.
\n\u2018They\u2019re almost engaged. Aren\u2019t you Bo?\u2019
\n\u2018Well, it\u2019s looking that way.\u2019
\n\u2018Maye we could get together sometime like in a foursome,\u2019 Laura said.
\n\u2018That would be nice,\u2019 Bo said.
\n\u2018What do you think, Danny?\u2019 Laura said.
\n\u2018Sure,\u2019 Danny said. He didn\u2019t know whether to be happy or sad with that. It could slow up proceedings between Laura and him.
\n\u2018There\u2019s a nice restaurant called the Trocadero that Ciar\u00e1n\u2014\u2019
\n\u2018Her fianc\u00e9,\u2019 Laura chimed in.
\n\u2018Well he\u2019s not really my fianc\u00e9, not yet.\u2019
\n\u2018All but,\u2019 Laura said.
\n\u2018The restaurant is in Saint Andrew\u2019s Street,\u2019 Bo said, \u2018and me and Ciar\u00e1n go there on special occasions\u2019.
\n\u2018Just a stone\u2019s throw away,\u2019 Danny said.
\nBo was called back to the counter by another girl as a queue was forming
\n\u2018Well, you guys have a nice day,\u2019 she said.
\nLaura told Danny as they made their way up Westmoreland Street that Bo did not have any religion. But she was thinking of becoming a Catholic and it was Ciar\u00e1n who suggested they get engaged. Bo said she didn\u2019t mind if it made him happy
\n\u2018Good for them.\u2019 Danny said.
\n\u2018What do you mean, Danny?\u2019
\n\u2018What I said.\u2019
\n\u2018You\u2019re not annoyed or anything?\u2019
\n\u2018Why would I be annoyed?\u2019
