This fascinating novel by James Lawless is about identity, personal and national. The protagonist, Derek has long suspected that his supposed father is not his real father and he sets out on a quest which takes him from Dublin to Spain and Northern Ireland to find out the identity of his biological father. Two damaged women in his life, his mother and Sinead, help and hinder him in this quest. The two countries, Ireland and Spain with their similar recent histories form a backdrop to a mystery novel that is engaging and informative. Even if the reader knows nothing about Irish history, the mystery and suspense draw one in. I read this novel in one sitting because I became completely absorbed in the story.
